“Your Y friends are your best friends,” she says.

Meet Marlene

Marlene first started volunteering in the Newcomer Connections’ Mom & Baby classes as a way to socialize and stay active in her community. During the classes, she spends time with the children while their mothers learn English. She loves bonding with the children and watching them grow every week.

Youth

The Y LEAD program allows youth in our community to develop not only leadership-based skills but also life skills. This program is important for youth, our YMCA, and our community.

Program Information

  • Participants: youth, ages 12 – 18
  • Program dates: school year, September – June
  • Cost: FREE

Benefits & Community Impact

  • Potential to serve 50 youth from East Saint John’s priority neighbourhoods
  • The structured skill-building program increases the chances of success outside of school
  • The focus on employability skills will help reduce generational poverty in our communities
  • Encourages youth to make friendships and connections outside of their neighbourhood

Participants learn a variety of important lessons — from what is a leader, and what does leadership mean, to discussing respect and ownership. These lessons allow youth to be active and become positive role models in their own social communities, at school and with their extra-curricular activities. Opportunities also allow youth to mentor kids in various sports and art-based activities, where they can further develop their leadership skills and toolboxes.

The youth host fundraising initiatives and volunteer for a variety of community organizations and learn about missions. The continuation of this program is more important than ever due to the COVID impact of online learning and physical distancing. Our youth currently in the program, are becoming stronger, confident, and pro-social Saint-Johners. They are able to carry their newly developed skills with them for the rest of their lives and implement them in new ways every day.

This is a 9-month program with weekly 2-hour meetings, with occasional time on weekends for volunteer opportunities. There is a maximum of 40 youth per year. They are also broken down into groups of 20: a Junior Group, aged 12-15, and a Senior Group, aged 16-18, each meeting separately.

What is YCAN?

YCAN is a national program that supports youth, ages 15 to 30, who face barriers on a regular basis as they develop and deliver service projects that respond to issues and needs, that matter to them, in their local community.

In partnership with 16 other YMCAs across Canada, youth from underrepresented communities are brought together to meet others from different backgrounds, discover their potential, and see their ability to create impact in the world around them; meeting them where they are, to increase their social and employment skills, confidence, and community engagement.

The YCAN Coordinator is dedicated to engaging with youth and structuring a program that meets them where they are so they can belong, grow, thrive, and lead as they imagine, develop, and carry out service projects.

You’ll have the opportunity to:

  • Meet youth from the surrounding communities;
  • Be a part of a community that sees a brighter future and care about being part of it;
  • Make a positive impact in the community through the planning, development and implementation of service projects based on community need and participant interest;
  • Develop social and professional skills for future employment and volunteer opportunities;
  • Explore personal interests through a variety of experiential learning opportunities;
  • Where applicable, receive high school credits and volunteer hours for your participation; and
  • Receive support from the YCAN Coordinator and a reference for future endeavours.

Your Commitment

To get the most out of the program we ask that the youth be accountable to the rest of their group and treat their attendance to YCAN as they would with employment. When the group meets will be scheduled based on what works for the majority of the participant and kept consistent. Any changes or additional meetings will be scheduled and agreed upon as a group.

Many of us face barriers of all kinds when participating in programs and courses. YCAN is structured so that everyone can participate to the best of their ability and in a way that is meaningful to them. If there is a barrier keeping you from participating in YCAN, please reach out to your YCAN Coordinator.

Registration for YCAN is ongoing. You are welcome to join us at any time!

For more information, please contact the YCAN Coordinator or learn more online HERE.

What is the YMCA Youth Council?

The YMCA of Southwestern New Brunswick Youth Council is a volunteer-based committee of young professionals and post-secondary students in the Saint John region who are passionate about growing our community.

Our Purpose and Goal
The Youth Council was formed in September 2017, with a goal to serve as a forum for open dialogue between the Y and the youth population within greater Saint John. Throughout the past 6 years, the council has provided mentorship to YMCA young leaders, hosted workshops and developed recommendations for the City of Saint John’s growth committee, engaged community stakeholders, and facilitated an employability program curriculum for the Y. The council is working towards a collaboration with national YMCA programs in order to act as a launching pad for more opportunities. The council has also represented the YMCA of Southwestern New Brunswick internationally at the YMCA 175 – a global youth conference with a goal to help shape a positive and sustainable future, the 20th World Council ’22 in Denmark, which hosted the highest governing bodies of the global YMCA.
How to Join
Since its formation, the council has adapted to the needs of the Saint John region and has worked on a variety of initiatives. In line with the YMCA’s goal of creating a sense of belonging in all avenues, the council is currently seeking individuals to help achieve this by contributing to their community in an impactful way.
